These Cumulus filters allows you to catalog images compressed according to the JPEG algorithm. Files must have the type “JPEG” or “JFIF”. These file types are similar and the following information applies to both.
The filter can catalog all images meeting the “JPEG File Interchange Format” standard as well as all other JPEG files containing a PICT preview. Other files—those that are compressed according to some variant of the JPEG algorithm and do not contain a preview—will create an error.
If a JPEG or JFIF file contains a preview, the preview will be used for creating the thumbnail. If no preview is present, the image itself needs to be decompressed which requires QuickTime to be installed. (QuickTime contains a JPEG compression/decompression component.) Cumulus can also automatically take advantage of properly installed QuickTime-compatible JPEG decompression hardware which usually is much faster than software decompression.
This filter supports the extensions made to JPEG files to add textual information used for newspapers. This information must be stored either as an "AXS" extension to the file or as a "IPTC" resource. Both contain a so-called IPTC record that stores additional information about the image. Each piece of information is stored as a different "data set". The JPEG/JFIF filters allow you to specify which data set should be included in the notes field when a JPEG or JFIF file is cataloged:
Each line represents an IPTC data set that can be included in the notes of a Cumulus record. A "•" in front of a data set indicates that its data is added to the notes. The above dialog shows the default settings of the JPEG and JFIF filters. To activate a data set select the corresponding line in the list and click the "Activate" button. When the data set is active the button changes to "Deactivate". You can also double-click the line to activate or deactivate the data set.
There is no type-specific information for JPEG or JFIF files.
